Q:  Will the magnetic field generated by the Sherlock* Tip Location System stylet interfere with cardiac rhythm devices?
A:  The Sherlock* TLS can be used on patients who have cardiac rhythm devices (e.g., pacemakers and defibrillators) implanted. However, when a cardiac rhythm device is present, it is recommended that the Sherlock* Tip Location System stylet be placed on the contralateral side. Temporary disruption of the cardiac rhythm device may occur if the Sherlock* TLS stylet passes within 0.4 in (1 cm) of the cardiac rhythm device. Use care if placing the Sherlock* TLS stylet on the same side as the cardiac rhythm device.  Please refer to the Instructions for Use for additional information on the Sherlock* Tip Location System.

Q:  Who can purchase and/or use the Sherlock* Tip Location System?
A:  The Sherlock* TLS is designed for use by healthcare providers. Federal (U.S.A.) law restricts this device to sale by or on the order of a physician. The Sherlock* TLS is designed for use by clinicians that place central venous catheters. This may include nurse practitioners, physicians, physician assistants and interventional radiology technologists.

Q:  Can I use the Sherlock* Tip Location System with PICCs that don't include a special Sherlock* Tip Location System stylet?
A:  No. The Sherlock* TLS is designed to detect the magnetic fields generated by the Sherlock* TLS stylet. Conventional PICCs do not generate a magnetic field, so they cannot be used in conjunction with the Sherlock* TLS. The Sherlock* TLS must only be used with Bard Access Systems central venous catheters that contain the Sherlock* TLS stylet.

Q:  Can I reuse the Sherlock* Tip Location System stylet and/or sensor holder?
A:  No. The Sherlock* TLS stylet and sensor holder are for single use only. These products should be used once and then disposed of following your facility's protocol.

Q:  Can I use the Sherlock* Tip Location System to replace X-ray tip confirmation?
A:  No. Current standard of practice requires X-ray tip confirmation of the location of the central venous catheters. A final confirmation of the catheter tip location must still be determined based on the facility protocol.
